THE Speaker of the Legislative Assembly is attending a two-day Sydney Dialogue for critical, emerging and cyber technologies which began yesterday in Australia.

The annual Sydney Dialogue is an annual summit convened by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) an independent, non-partisan think tank that produces expert and timely advice for Australian and global leaders including Tonga.

The Sydney Dialogue brings together world leaders and industry leaders to finding and creating solutions to cybersecurity challenges.

Lord Fakafanua was among panelists who discuss the issue of (Sub)sea to sky: the future of digital connectivity in the Indo-Pacific yesterday.

The ASPI reports that technology is developing much faster than societies can regulate it or even fully absorb its implications. The lack of any agreed roadmaps for how might governments including Tonga respond to these new technological advances have led to the creation of The Sydney Dialogue.

It was created to break down silos and bring together political leaders, senior officials, technology industry innovators and civil society leaders aims to promote diverse views on best ways to seize opportunities, minimize risks and bring more diverse voices into public debates.

While the positions of the United States, China and Europe tend to dominate the global conversation, the world hears too little about policy thinking taking place in India, Japan, Southeast Asia and Oceania including Tonga.

The Sydney Dialogue is a place where new partnerships are built between governments and with industry. This year’s summit explores the trends dominating international technology, national security and geopolitics.

This year’s discussion also involves technologies that are disrupting workforces, increasingly sophisticated nature of cybercrime, online disinformation, hybrid warfare and electoral interferences – risks to our societies that now benefit from use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies among other agendas.

TSD concludes in Sydney today.
