The Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Peng Qinghua on Tuesday opened the Second Seminar for Parliamentarians from Central Asian Countries and Pacific Island Countries, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
 
A delegation from the Legislative of Tonga is among 60 Legislatures and Parliamentary staff from 14 Pacific Island and East Asian countries are taking part in the seminar.

The theme of the seminar is “Strengthening cooperation among legislative bodies and jointly building a community with a shared future for China and Pacific Island countries”

In his opening speech, Vice Chairman Peng Qinghua said China is willing to cooperate closely with the Legislative Bodies of relevant countries including Tonga to create a sound legal and policy environment for achieving common development and prosperity and building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Discussions during the seminar will be conducted around the concept and practices of the whole-process people’s democracy, the significance of building a community with a shared future for mankind, the achievements and opportunities of Chinese modernization paths, green development and blue economy, determination and action in addressing climate change.

Hon. Dr. ‘Uhilamoelangi Fasi reemphasized that the Tongan Parliament is eager to foster more exchanges and cooperation with China, supporting global initiatives and exploring paths to modernization while working towards common development.

He added that China's remarkable ascent on the world stage has served as an inspiration to the Tonga delegation, motivating them to create similar opportunities for the Tongan people, notwithstanding the geographic and economic differences.

Hon. Dr. ‘Uhilamoelangi Fasi is leading Tonga’s delegation which includes Hon. Veivosa Taka, Hon. Moa’ale Finau and Hon. Dr. Mo’ale ‘Otunuku and accompanied by the Deputy Clerk Dr. Sione Vikilani.

The seminar is from the 22-30 October. Countries taking part in the seminar are: Fiji, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tajikistan, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vanuatu.
