LORD SPEAKER BILATERAL WITH SPEAKER OF AZERBAIJAN PARLIAMENT
On 16 November 2024, the Speaker of Tonga's Legislative Assembly, Lord Fakafanua, met with the Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, H.E. Ms. Sahiba Gafarova, in Baku, Azerbaijan, for a key bilateral discussion on the margins of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP 29).
Both parliamentary leaders recognized the urgent need for global cooperation in addressing the impacts of climate change. They emphasized that small island nations like Tonga are particularly vulnerable and stressed the importance of international partnerships in supporting climate adaptation and resilience efforts in the Pacific.
Lord Fakafanua highlighted that climate change is not only an environmental issue but a security concern for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He expressed appreciation for the humanitarian, financial, and technical assistance provided by countries like Azerbaijan, which plays a crucial role in helping Tonga and other island nations adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Lord Fakafanua acknowledged Azerbaijan's efforts to ensure that the voices of small island states are heard at COP29, elevating their concerns on the global stage.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties between Tonga and Azerbaijan, with Speaker Gafarova sharing valuable insights into Azerbaijan's post-conflict recovery and regional initiatives.
Lord Fakafanua is currently attending the IPU Parliamentary Meeting on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, joined by fellow Members of Parliament from Tonga, Hon Paula Piveni Piukala (People’s Representative for Tongatapu 7), Hon Kapelieli Lanumata (People’s Representative for Tongatapu 10) and Hon Dr.Taniela Fusimalohi (People’s Representative for ‘Eua 11). Their participation, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Tonga, demonstrates Tonga's commitment to universal climate action.
Accompanying the Members are Ms. Silivia ‘Atiola (Legislative Counsel) and Ms. Sulia Makasini (Head of Committees & Library Division) from the Office of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga.
