A Special Meeting for the elected Representatives of the Legislative Assembly shall be convened tomorrow, Friday 27th September 2019, at 10 am, at the Parliamentary Chambers of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, to elect the Prime Minister of Tonga.

This follows an invitation issued by the Lord Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Fakafanua to the elected Representatives of the Legislative Assembly on Friday 20th September 2019 to submit their nominations of candidates for the Office of the Prime Minister which has been vacant, following the passing of Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, on 12th September 2019.

The acceptance of nominations of candidates for Prime Minister was closed at 4.30 pm today. The Office of the Lord Speaker received two nominations of candidates for the Prime Minister Designate.

The Lord Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will open the envelopes containing the nominations at the special meeting that is to take place, where the names of the two candidates will be revealed.

The meeting to elect a Prime Minister shall be conducted in accordance with the Act of the Constitution of Tonga.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly conveys his best wishes to the candidates who have been nominated and to all the elected Representatives of the Legislative Assembly. May the Almighty God guide us as we prepare for the extremely significant tasks ahead.
