THE Parliamentary Select Committee established to investigate into the spike of the electricity cost following the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruptions is ongoing.

On Monday, the Committee chaired by Tongatapu 2 constituency MP, Hon. ‘Uhila Moe Langi Fasi convened another meeting to continue their inquiry into the issue. Former and current staff of the Tonga Power Limited (TPL) as well as the Tonga Power Board of Directors, Tonga Electricity Commission have been interviewed by the Committee last week.

The Committee’s terms of reference are to inquire into the spike of the electricity and the tariff cost as well as other issues of concerns relating to power electricity.

In May Tongatapu 2 MP tabled a motion which were co-signed by Tongatapu 4 MP, Tongatapu 5 MP and ‘Eua 11 MP calling for a parliament’s select committee to look into the matter.

From May 30 up until today, the Committee have met more than 10 times to probe further into the matter.

Meanwhile other Parliament Standing Committees, Finance and Public Accounts, Legislation, Fisheries and Agriculture Committee are also working behind the scenes on pending issues before reporting back to the House.
