Tongatapu Noble’s Representative No. 2, Lord Tu’ivakano, is calling on the Ministry of Land, Survey and Natural Resources for more awareness on Land Act because of unlawful sales of land in Tonga.
Lord Tu’ivakano made the call this morning while members of the Whole House Committee were deliberating on the Budget Estimates for the ministry.
He said, many land holders in the country have put up land for sale but the ministry should have done more by raising awareness to remind the public that this activity is illegal.
According to Section 12 of the Land Act, 2020 Revised Edition, “Any landholder who sells or attempts to sell any land out-and-out to any other person shall be liable on conviction therefore to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 10 years.”
Parliament is still deliberating on the 2022/2023 Appropriation Bill.
